Matric Pass Rate Climbs to 84.1 Percent — Best Result in 30 Years
The Department of Basic Education announced a national matric pass rate of 84.1% for 2025, the highest in three decades, with eight provinces recording their best-ever results.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced that South Africa's 2025 National Senior Certificate results produced a national pass rate of 84.1%, the highest in 30 years and a significant improvement from 82.9% in 2024.
Province by Province
The Western Cape retained top position with a 92.3% pass rate. Gauteng followed at 90.1%. The most remarkable improvement came from Limpopo, which climbed from 72% to 81.4% — a 9.4 percentage point gain attributed to the province's intensive Saturday school and teacher support programme.
Bachelor Pass Analysis
The bachelor pass rate — the benchmark for university entrance — reached 46.8% of all candidates, up from 44.1% in 2024. Mathematics passes improved significantly, with 67% of candidates who wrote the subject achieving 40% or above.
Looking Beyond the Numbers
Despite the celebration, Minister Gwarube urged South Africans not to lose sight of the structural challenges that remain. "These results reflect only the learners who made it to Grade 12," she said. "The dropout crisis between Grade 8 and Grade 12 means hundreds of thousands of young people never get the chance to write matric."
She announced a new R2.1 billion retention programme targeting Grade 8-10 learners most at risk of dropping out, focusing on free school meals, transport subsidies, and mental health support.
